In art cutlery, the handle is not just a functional grip: it is the soul of the knife. It gives the knife its character, its warmth in the hand, its uniqueness. At Maison Château LAGUIOLE, each material is selected for its nobility, rarity, and history.
Animal materials
Buffalo horn
Buffalo horn is the emblematic material of LAGUIOLE cutlery. Each piece is unique: colors, grain patterns, and transparencies vary from one handle to another. It is a living material, warm to the touch, that develops a patina over time.
- Origin: Southeast Asian buffalo (naturally shed horn or from the food industry)
- Colors: from translucent blonde to deep black, through amber
- Care: avoid prolonged water contact, never put in the dishwasher
- Durability: exceptional, a horn handle lasts several generations
Ram's horn (tip)
Rarer than buffalo horn, ram's horn features spectacular natural spiral patterns. Primarily used on collector's pieces.
Precious woods
Ebony
A tropical wood of exceptional density, ebony is recognizable by its deep black color and silky feel. It is the noblest wood in cutlery.

- Origin: Africa, Madagascar, FSC certified for responsible sourcing
- Character: sober, elegant, timeless
Olive wood
Originally from the Mediterranean basin, olive wood is recognizable by its wavy grain and warm tones (honey, golden, brown). It evokes Provence and the art of living.
Juniper
An aromatic fine-grained wood, juniper releases a subtle scent of garrigue. Light and resistant, it brings a southern touch to our creations.
Violetwood
Extremely rare, violetwood (or Rio rosewood) features unique violet reflections. Reserved for exceptional pieces and limited editions.
Exceptional materials
Muonionalusta meteorite, STARDUST Collection
The most extraordinary material we use. The Muonionalusta meteorite is an asteroid fragment aged 4.5 billion years, which fell in Scandinavia approximately 800,000 years ago.
- Composition: iron-nickel alloy with Widmanstatten patterns (unique crystallization formed in space)
- Rarity: each fragment is certified, numbered, and documented
- Collection: the STARDUST Collection, co-created with Raimonds Tomsons (Best Sommelier of the World 2023), exclusively uses this meteorite
- Price: pieces between €300 and €500, an object at the crossroads of art, science, and gastronomy
Mother-of-pearl
Mother-of-pearl offers incomparable iridescent reflections. Used as decorative inlays on certain models, it adds a touch of light.
Pressed resin
A modern alternative, pressed resin allows for vibrant colors and maximum durability. Ideal for intensive professional use (restaurants, bars).

Our Thiers workshop works these materials by hand, with know-how passed down through generations of Auvergne cutlers.
