The classic Laguiole silhouette, as a pocket knife

The Château LAGUIOLE® Heritage folding knife keeps the classic silhouette of the Laguiole knife: a curved 12 cm handle closed at each end by a stainless steel bolster (the bolster is the metal cap that finishes the handle and protects the blade pivot). Two bolsters, then, where the Signature folding knife carries only one. The house catalogue describes this shape as « emblematic and legendary », inherited from the Laguiole knife whose origins go back to the early 19th century. The back of the spring is guilloché, that is, chased with decorative engraving, and carries the forged bee, the emblem of the Laguiole knife. The blade pivots on a single liner (the liner is the steel plate that holds the mechanism inside the handle) and is held open or closed by the pressure of the spring. Every piece is assembled and polished by hand in the house's own workshop in Thiers, in the Puy-de-Dôme, then stamped with the Château LAGUIOLE® logo. Twenty-one references make up the range, that is seventeen handle materials: twelve woods, from pale boxwood to ironwood, three animal materials (black or blond buffalo horn, ram horn, white bone) and two composites (red, green or blue stamina, and mosaic pavement acrylic). Every scale of natural material is unique: neither figure nor shade repeats from one knife to the next. Text engraving is offered free of charge at checkout, and the knife ships in its box with the member card whose QR code activates the lifetime warranty. Woolly mammoth tusks come out of the Siberian permafrost, where they have lain for more than ten thousand years. Depending on how it is cut, the handle shows the cream ivory core, the outer bark stained by minerals in the ground, or the geometric plates of a molar: three faces of the same material, and no piece repeats. Heritage or Signature? Both Château LAGUIOLE® folding knives share the guilloché spring, the forged bee and the single liner. The Heritage carries two bolsters, one at each end of the handle, and a 12 cm handle: the classic Laguiole silhouette, the fuller of the two in the hand, from 150 to 204 €. The Signature has the top bolster only, an 11.3 cm handle and 78 g in the catalogue: a cleaner line, a lighter object, from 131 to 179 €. Do not confuse it either with the Heritage table knife, which does not fold and is sold in boxes of two, four or six, or with the Le Thiers® by Guy Vialis folding knife, from the house's other brand, made to the rules of the Confrérie du Couteau de Thiers, with a full handle, one or two bolsters, in 11 or 12 cm, with an optional corkscrew. Classic, Grand Cru and Melchior, for their part, are sommelier knives: corkscrews, not pocket knives. Château LAGUIOLE® was created in 1993 on the initiative of Guy Vialis, a French sommelier who wanted to turn a service tool into a work of art. After his death in 2016, LIGNE W, founded in 2008 by Sébastien Lézier, took over the brand at the end of 2017; since 2021 the umbrella brand Maison Château LAGUIOLE® has united Château LAGUIOLE®, LIGNE W and Guy Vialis. The knives are made in Thiers, in the Puy-de-Dôme, the French capital of cutlery, where every piece is assembled and polished by hand. The house is a partner of the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) and of the Union de la Sommellerie Française, and devotes a collection to the ASI World's Best Sommeliers, from Shinya Tasaki (1995) to Raimonds Tomsons (2023). Every Heritage folding knife ships with its member card: its QR code registers the product and activates the lifetime warranty.

Handcrafted in France — Each Château LAGUIOLE is crafted in our workshop near Thiers, France, with exceptional expertise and a rigorous artisanal process.

Handle in fossil mammoth ivory (Mammuthus primigenius), tusk core, tusk bark or stabilised molar depending on the model.

Caring for this material

Fossil ivory is hygroscopic: it moves with ambient humidity and can crack if it dries out suddenly. Keep the knife away from direct sunlight and radiators, wipe it dry and never immerse it; a resin-stabilised bark or molar needs nothing more than a soft cloth, no oil and no care product.

This product benefits from a lifetime warranty. The warranty is valid for the entire normal use period of the product, subject to compliance with the care and usage conditions defined in the warranty policy. To activate this warranty, you must register your product online.

How to proceed?

  • Scan the QR code on the back of the member card included in the box.
  • Register your product by following the instructions on the dedicated page.
  • Hand wash only, in warm water, then dry at once with a soft cloth. Never in the dishwasher, never left to soak: water swells wood, horn and bone handles and seeps into the mechanism.
  • Wipe the blade after each use, especially after acidic food (lemon, tomato, wine): stainless steel resists corrosion well but is not immune.
  • If opening stiffens, a drop of food-grade oil (mineral or sunflower) on the blade pivot and under the spring restores a smooth action.
  • Natural handle material (wood, horn, bone): keep away from direct heat, sunlight and prolonged damp; a soft cloth is enough, and for woods a drop of oil now and then.
  • Store the knife closed and dry, in its box or its sheath, never in a damp drawer.
  • Fossil ivory is hygroscopic: it moves with ambient humidity and can crack if it dries out suddenly. Keep the knife away from direct sunlight and radiators, wipe it dry and never immerse it; a resin-stabilised bark or molar needs nothing more than a soft cloth, no oil and no care product.

To ensure the longevity, performance and elegance of your sommelier knife, please follow these care instructions:

  • Hand wash only: this product is not dishwasher safe. Prolonged contact with water may damage materials and reduce durability. After each use, gently wipe your knife with a soft cloth. Do not immerse or soak in water.
  • Protect from heat and moisture: avoid exposing your knife to intense heat, excessive humidity or harsh chemicals.
  • Handle with care: protect the handle and mechanisms from impacts and drops, which could damage the blade or structure.
  • Mechanism maintenance: if you notice slight resistance in the mechanism, apply a few drops of food-grade mineral oil to the moving parts. Professionals should lubricate every 2 weeks.
  • Proper storage: after use, store your knife in a dry place, away from moisture, to preserve its performance and quality.

What is the difference between a Heritage and a Signature folding knife?
The Heritage carries two bolsters, one at each end of the handle, and a 12 cm handle: the classic Laguiole silhouette. The Signature has the top bolster only and an 11.3 cm handle, for a cleaner line and a lighter object. Guilloché spring, forged bee and single liner are common to both.
Will my handle look exactly like the photo?
No, and that is intended: wood, horn and bone are living materials, and every scale differs in figure and shade. Only stamina and acrylic are consistent from one piece to the next.
Is it dishwasher safe?
No. Hand wash in warm water, then dry at once. The dishwasher damages wood, horn and bone handles and can seize the blade pivot; so does prolonged soaking.
Is engraving really free, and what can be engraved?
An engraved knife is personalised: it cannot be returned or exchanged.
What is the warranty?
A lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, under normal use and care. It is activated by registering the knife online with the QR code on the member card included in the box.
Can I take it travelling or to a restaurant?
It is made for the table, for travel and for the outdoors, but it travels stowed in its box or sheath at the bottom of a bag, and never in cabin baggage: on a plane, a knife goes in checked baggage.
