The emblem of French cutlery, at the table

The Château LAGUIOLE® Heritage steak knife keeps the traditional shape of the Laguiole knife, whose origins date back to the early nineteenth century: a curved handle, a slender silhouette, and the forged bee at the head of the guilloché spine. It is the house's classic line, the one you recognise at first glance. Beneath the Tulipwood (Brazilian tulipwood) handle sits a 12 cm fixed blade in X46Cr13 stainless steel, framed by two stainless steel bolsters: the bolsters are the metal pieces that close the handle at each end and give it its strength. Around 103 g in the hand, enough to cut through a piece of meat without forcing. Each model comes as a set of 2, 4 or 6 matching knives, with the membership card that activates the lifetime warranty. The knives are made in Thiers, in the Puy-de-Dôme, France, by the house's own craftsmen. Rosewood brings a reddish-brown warmth to the handle, with darker veins that vary from piece to piece. A natural material, unique to every set. Heritage or Signature? Both Château LAGUIOLE® steak knife ranges share the X46Cr13 blade, the two bolsters, the forged bee and a comparable palette of handle materials. Heritage keeps the traditional Laguiole shape and sits longer in the hand: 23.5 cm overall, a 12 cm blade and about 103 g, against 22.1 cm, 10.6 cm and 85 g for Signature (house catalogue). Signature offers a contemporary, understated reading of it, with a tapered handle and rounded edges. Heritage for the classic silhouette and presence at the table, Signature for the clean line. The Heritage folding knife, in 12 cm, extends the range for the pocket. Château LAGUIOLE® was born in 1993, when Guy Vialis, a sommelier, created the brand's first sommelier knife, made in Thiers. After his death in 2016, Sébastien Lézier, founder of LIGNE W in 2008, took over Château LAGUIOLE at the end of 2017; since 2021 the Maison Château LAGUIOLE umbrella brand has united Château LAGUIOLE®, LIGNE W and Guy Vialis. Heritage steak knives are made in Thiers (Puy-de-Dôme), the French capital of cutlery, in our workshop at Saint-Rémy-sur-Durolle. The house signs editions with Best Sommeliers of the World, among them Shinya Tasaki (ASI 1995) and Raimonds Tomsons (ASI 2023). Every Château LAGUIOLE® piece is covered by the house's lifetime warranty, activated online with the membership card in the box; the Thiers workshop handles repairs.

Tulipwood handle, cream to pink ground streaked with red and orange.

What French cabinetmaking calls bois de rose is a South American Dalbergia, most often Dalbergia decipularis from north-eastern Brazil. The ground is cream to pink, crossed by red, orange and yellow streaks whose pattern changes with every scale, and the wood gives off a faint rose-like scent when worked.

Caring for this material

Tulipwood keeps its streaks longer away from direct sunlight, whose ultraviolet light fades the pinks and reds: store the knife in its sheath rather than on an exposed surface. Clean with a soft cloth only, no water and no detergent; the wood is naturally oily and needs no more than a drop of food grade mineral oil a year, and only if the surface looks dry.

This product benefits from a lifetime warranty. The warranty is valid for the entire normal use period of the product, subject to compliance with the care and usage conditions defined in the warranty policy. To activate this warranty, you must register your product online.

How to proceed?

  • Scan the QR code on the back of the member card included in the box.
  • Register your product by following the instructions on the dedicated page.
  • Hand wash only, right after the meal, in warm water with a soft cloth: never in the dishwasher, never left to soak.
  • Dry the blade, bolsters and handle immediately with a dry cloth; this is the one habit that prevents spots and oxidation.
  • No scouring pads, abrasives or harsh detergents.
  • Natural handles (wood, horn, bone, stag): now and then, a small amount of beeswax or linseed oil feeds the material and keeps it from drying out or cracking; keep the knife away from heat and direct sunlight.
  • Composite handles (Stamina, carbon, PaperStone®, acrylic, resin, stabilised beech): hand washing recommended; if a dishwasher cycle is unavoidable, stay below 50 °C and avoid direct heat and UV, which fade colours.
  • Cut on a wooden or soft board, never on glass, stone or ceramic, which damage the edge.
  • Natural wood: a little beeswax or linseed oil now and then; never soaked, never in the dishwasher.

To ensure the longevity, performance and elegance of your sommelier knife, please follow these care instructions:

  • Hand wash only: this product is not dishwasher safe. Prolonged contact with water may damage materials and reduce durability. After each use, gently wipe your knife with a soft cloth. Do not immerse or soak in water.
  • Protect from heat and moisture: avoid exposing your knife to intense heat, excessive humidity or harsh chemicals.
  • Handle with care: protect the handle and mechanisms from impacts and drops, which could damage the blade or structure.
  • Mechanism maintenance: if you notice slight resistance in the mechanism, apply a few drops of food-grade mineral oil to the moving parts. Professionals should lubricate every 2 weeks.
  • Proper storage: after use, store your knife in a dry place, away from moisture, to preserve its performance and quality.

What is the difference between the Heritage and Signature steak knives?
Same X46Cr13 blade, same two bolsters, same forged bee. Heritage keeps the traditional Laguiole shape and sits longer in the hand (23.5 cm, 12 cm blade, about 103 g); Signature is the contemporary version, shorter and lighter (22.1 cm, 10.6 cm blade, about 85 g), with a tapered handle and rounded edges.
Are these knives dishwasher safe?
No. Hand wash right after the meal, then dry immediately. The dishwasher damages natural handle materials and can dull the stainless steel parts; damage caused by improper care is not covered by the warranty.
Will the handle in my set look exactly like the photo?
Not exactly: horn, wood and bone are natural materials, and every handle has its own veining and shade.
What is the warranty, and how do I activate it?
A lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, after online registration of the QR code on the membership card included in the box (Privilege Member Programme). It covers neither wear, nor the cutting edge, nor damage caused by improper care. Repair requests are made online and handled by the Thiers workshop.
Can the knives be engraved?
Yes, engraving is complimentary: a text of up to 25 characters (name, initials, date), on the left side of the blade or the right side of the front bolster, in the font of your choice. An engraved product cannot be returned or exchanged.
Set of 2, 4 or 6: what does each set contain?
The chosen number of knives, in the same material and finish, with the membership card. The price per knife decreases with the size of the set. Most of the range's materials also exist on the Classic and Grand Cru corkscrews (olive wood, ebony, cade wood (juniper wood), Stamina, buffalo horn, ram horn), for a matching table.
