The original model, since 1993

In 1993, sommelier Guy Vialis designed the first luxury sommelier corkscrew: the Château LAGUIOLE® Classic. More than thirty years on, this original model is still made in Thiers (Puy-de-Dôme, France) and is recognisable at a glance by its forged bee and its guilloché spring, the engraved decorative spine. It is a tool first. A serrated blade cuts the foil at the neck of the bottle; a five-turn stainless steel worm enters the cork; the lever rests on the lip of the bottle and the cork comes out without effort. Body and lever are made of Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel, chosen for its corrosion resistance. Closed, the corkscrew measures 11.4 cm and weighs about 90 g. The handle comes in more than twenty materials, from wood to horn, from Stamina to stainless steel, up to silver and gold, in mirror or brushed finish. Amourette is one of the rarest woods in cutlery; dense and heavy in the hand, it darkens slightly with light over the years. The Classic is the founding model, the one from which the House's other sommelier corkscrews derive. It has a single bolster, the metal piece that caps the end of the handle, and weighs about 90 g. The Grand Cru keeps its features with wider bolsters (two bolsters, 100 g), for intensive use on the floor. The Edge is a Grand Cru underlined with blue, red or yellow tinted spacers. The Melchior keeps one bolster but widens the handle (95 g). The Versailles cuts its handle from historic woods of the gardens of the Château de Versailles and comes with a blue leather sheath. The World's Best Sommelier collection bears the names of the winners of the ASI competition. For anyone who wants the original silhouette, the slimmest of the range and, with the Versailles, the lightest (90 g), the Classic is the one. Château LAGUIOLE® was born in 1993 in Thiers, the French capital of cutlery, on the initiative of sommelier Guy Vialis, who wanted to turn a service tool into an object of art. After his death in 2016, the brand was taken over at the end of 2017 by LIGNE W, founded in 2008 by Sébastien Lézier, then brought in 2021 under the umbrella brand Maison Château LAGUIOLE®. The House is a partner of the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) and of the Union de la Sommellerie Française (UDSF); its World's Best Sommelier collection bears the names of ASI competition winners, including Shinya Tasaki (1995) and Raimonds Tomsons (2023). Every sommelier corkscrew comes with a member card carrying a QR code: it attests that the piece comes from our workshops, and registering it online activates the lifetime warranty.

Handcrafted in France — Each Château LAGUIOLE is crafted in our workshop near Thiers, France, with exceptional expertise and a rigorous artisanal process.

Snakewood handle (amourette, Brosimum guianense), the speckled hardwood of the Guianas.

Snakewood, known in French as amourette, comes from the forests of the Guianas: its red brown ground is scattered with black speckles that recall snakeskin. The pattern is created by the tree's own growth and never repeats, so two handles cut from the same log will not match. It is not serpent wood, which is a different species, pale and striped.

Caring for this material

Wipe the handle with a dry cloth after every service and never let it soak: snakewood is extremely dense but it dislikes sudden swings in humidity, which can open fine checks. Twice a year, a light film of food grade mineral oil applied with a cloth and then wiped off feeds the wood and maintains the polish.

This product benefits from a lifetime warranty. The warranty is valid for the entire normal use period of the product, subject to compliance with the care and usage conditions defined in the warranty policy. To activate this warranty, you must register your product online.

How to proceed?

  • Scan the QR code on the back of the member card included in the box.
  • Register your product by following the instructions on the dedicated page.
  • Hand wash only, never in the dishwasher; do not leave to soak. After use, wipe blade, worm and handle with a soft, dry cloth.
  • If the mechanism stiffens, apply a few drops of food-grade mineral oil to the pivots of the lever and worm; every two weeks in professional use.
  • Rest the lever on the lip of the bottle and pull straight: a worm bent by sideways force is a matter of use, not a manufacturing defect, and is not covered by the warranty.
  • Store the corkscrew in its sheath, dry, away from heat.
  • The handle material has its own care: see the material section of this page.
  • The House's repair service restores worn parts; requests are made online from the Repair Service section.
  • Natural wood: wipe dry after use, do not leave to soak; an occasional drop of wood oil feeds the handle.

To ensure the longevity, performance and elegance of your sommelier knife, please follow these care instructions:

  • Hand wash only: this product is not dishwasher safe. Prolonged contact with water may damage materials and reduce durability. After each use, gently wipe your knife with a soft cloth. Do not immerse or soak in water.
  • Protect from heat and moisture: avoid exposing your knife to intense heat, excessive humidity or harsh chemicals.
  • Handle with care: protect the handle and mechanisms from impacts and drops, which could damage the blade or structure.
  • Mechanism maintenance: if you notice slight resistance in the mechanism, apply a few drops of food-grade mineral oil to the moving parts. Professionals should lubricate every 2 weeks.
  • Proper storage: after use, store your knife in a dry place, away from moisture, to preserve its performance and quality.

Classic or Grand Cru: which one to choose?
The Classic is the original 1993 model: one bolster, about 90 g, the slimmest silhouette. The Grand Cru keeps its features with wider bolsters (two bolsters, 100 g), designed for intensive use on the floor. Same steel, same foil cutter, same closed dimensions.
Is it dishwasher safe?
No. Hand wash and dry immediately with a soft cloth. The dishwasher damages the handle, especially horn or wood, and dulls the finishes.
Is it suitable for a left-handed user?
The movement is the same whichever hand you use: the worm screws in clockwise and the lever rests on either side of the bottle neck.
Can it be engraved, and how long does it take?
Yes, the product page has the « Personalise » button. An engraved piece is made for you: it cannot be returned or exchanged. Indicative shipping times without engraving: France 2 to 5 working days, European Union 4 to 7, rest of the world 6 to 12.
What is the warranty?
Lifetime warranty upon registration of the member card included in the box (QR code on the back). It covers manufacturing defects; it excludes wear, knocks, a worm bent by forced use, the cutting edge and engraved elements.
Will my corkscrew look exactly like the photo?
Not exactly, and that is intended: horn, wood and burls are natural materials whose colour and grain vary from one piece to the next. Stamina, plexi, stainless steel, silver or gold handles are more uniform.
